Singapore is accelerating the development of its precious metals market infrastructure and plans to launch an over-the-counter (OTC) gold clearing system by the end of this year, while further expanding its gold storage and custody services. As one of Asia‘s leading financial centers, Singapore aims to strengthen its position in the global gold market through upgrades to its clearing, custody, and trading ecosystem, providing more comprehensive support for the region’s growing demand for gold.
Under the plan, several major international financial institutions will participate in building the new system, including JPMorgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, DBS Bank, OCBC Bank, United Overseas Bank, and ICBC Standard Bank. Interbank gold trading is expected to be gradually introduced next year, allowing market participants to benefit from more efficient clearing and liquidity support during Asian trading hours, thereby improving the efficiency of regional gold transactions.
In recent years, Asia has become increasingly important in global gold consumption, investment, and reserve accumulation. The ongoing trend of central banks increasing their gold holdings has also fueled demand for stronger market infrastructure. Against this backdrop, Singapore aims to leverage its strengths in financial regulation, capital mobility, and cross-border services to become a key bridge between Asian demand and international markets, rather than directly challenging established gold centers such as London, New York, or Switzerland.
In fact, Singapores push into the gold industry is not a short-term initiative. Over the past decade, the country has steadily promoted physical gold products, developed large-scale storage facilities, and attracted international precious metals firms to establish operations locally. As geopolitical risks have risen over the past two years, safe-haven demand has increased significantly, boosting interest in gold allocation and accelerating the pace of related developments.
Beyond trading infrastructure, the Monetary Authority of Singapore also plans to introduce gold vault services for central banks, providing official institutions with local gold custody solutions. For central banks seeking to diversify the locations of their reserve holdings, a custody center within the Asian time zone that offers a mature financial system and a stable regulatory environment presents a compelling option. This initiative is expected to further strengthen Singapores role across the global gold value chain.
At the same time, authorities have announced adjustments to tax policies by removing the cap on tax incentives for family offices and eligible funds investing in physical gold. Market participants generally believe this move will attract more long-term capital into gold investments, encourage institutional ownership of physical gold, and drive demand for related storage, logistics, settlement, and financial services.
From FXTRADING‘s perspective, Singapore’s simultaneous upgrades to its gold clearing, custody, and tax frameworks reflect Asia‘s accelerating efforts to capture a greater share of global precious metals pricing influence and liquidity resources. As regional trading infrastructure continues to improve, Asia’s participation and influence in the global gold market are likely to expand further. At the same time, growing central bank reserve demand, institutional portfolio allocation, and cross-border precious metals business activity could help drive the Asian gold ecosystem toward greater maturity and internationalization.
