‘Crypto Man’ Explores $34.9B Crypto Crash in January 2025 Premiere
South Korean movie Crypto Man, starring the late actor Song Jae-rim, is set to premiere on January 15, 2025. Inspired by true events, the film delves into the dramatic aftermath of South Korea‘s $34.9 billion crypto crash—a financial disaster that left thousands in financial ruin and continues to affect the country’s economy.
The film is directed by Hyun Hae-ri, who is best known for her socially conscious documentaries, including Nine Times Fired. Hyun emphasizes that the movie is based on true events connected to the crypto crash that wiped out more than 50 trillion won (approximately $34.9 billion). While Hyun did not specify which particular case is highlighted, she revealed that many victims of the collapse are “still awaiting a final ruling from judicial authorities.”
Hyun stated, “I will present it as realistically as possible while also being sharp, and include elements of dark comedy,” ensuring the film resonates with audiences. To ensure the films accuracy, the production team underwent “rigorous legal consultation.”

The late Song Jae-rim portrays Yang Do-hyun, a struggling young entrepreneur who, after several failed startup ventures, finds success in the world of cryptocurrency. Partnering with his friend Ji-Woo, Yang creates an altcoin called MOMMY, which quickly skyrockets in value. However, success comes at a price, as the crypto industrys regulatory authorities begin to focus their attention on his activities, leading to legal and personal turmoil.
The movie aims to depict the intense lives of South Koreans “addicted to stocks by day and trading crypto by night,” highlighting the tension between the allure of wealth and the devastating consequences of unchecked ambition.
An October report from leading South Korean crypto exchanges Upbit and Bithumb revealed that 3,759 South Koreans now own crypto wallets worth more than 1 billion won, underscoring the deep-rooted impact of cryptocurrency in the countrys financial ecosystem.
Final Thoughts:
Crypto Man promises to be more than just a tale of financial collapse. It‘s a reflection of the volatile world of cryptocurrencies and the high-stakes risks faced by young entrepreneurs in an ever-evolving market. With its timely release, the movie is set to spark conversations about the dark side of cryptocurrency and the human toll it takes on those who dare to dive in. Whether it’s a cautionary tale or a dramatic portrait of ambition gone wrong, Crypto Man is one to watch in 2025.
